Supporting Education in South Sudan

When civil strife erupted in South Sudan in December 2013, many fled their homes taking nothing with them. Tens of thousands raced to a United Nations compound near the capital, Juba, that overnight became designated as a Protection of Civilians (POC) Camp, now redesignated as an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. The hastily improvised camp provides security for more than 20,000 but very little else. Many of the children whose parents have been killed or are missing due to the recent conflict have few or no clothes, very little food, and no opportunity to attend school.

Since 2016 AFRECS has worked closely with Bishop John Gattek to support orphans and unaccompanied children at the camp. With AFREC’s support, and the donation of building materials from some local organizations, two school buildings have been built within the IDP camp, with more to be built soon when funding permits.

Beginning with 50 students, the school, now called the Glow MAPS School, provides learning, healing, and hope for 350 boys and girls, each having lost at least one parent in the civil war. AFRECS’ support provides a tangible ministry to the children through education, a daily meal, and clothing. We are the main supporting partner of the school, supporting the teaching and feeding of the children. Physical school structures are slowly replacing the tattered tent classrooms; but there’s need for more support to help these children succeed. This is an area where your gift can make a great difference in the life of a child.
