The Intersecting Crises of the Sudans: Pressing for Collaborative Solutions

The crises unfolding in Sudan and South Sudan are distinct but deeply interconnected, with devastating consequences for civilians and growing implications for peace and stability across the region. For the Episcopal Churches of Sudan and South Sudan, and for people of faith around the world, these realities raise urgent questions about humanitarian response, peacebuilding, advocacy, and solidarity.

Ambassador Dane Smith, Executive Director of AFRECS (American Friends of the Episcopal Church of the Sudans) and a panel of subject matter experts held a timely conversation about the evolving crises and what is needed to move toward peace. Together, they explored the humanitarian impact on civilians; the connections among conflict, political instability, regional security, and the flow of arms; and why regional and international efforts to resolve these crises have struggled to gain traction. Moving from understanding to action, the conversation considered opportunities for collaborative solutions and the roles regional and international actors can play in advancing peace. We also explored what Episcopal communities and people of faith can do to stand in solidarity with our siblings in Sudan and South Sudan, support those working for peace, and advocate for a more hopeful future.
